Position Overview:
This is a leadership position responsible for the implementation of EHS and waste management programs. Responsible for Radiation and Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection at the BWXT Medical site in Vancouver, BC, ensuring compliance with requirements of the facility operations licence issued by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The position includes accountability for waste management with a focus on radioactive waste characterization, segregation, storage for decay, clearance and disposal.

Your Day to Day as a EHS and Waste Manager:

Specific responsibilities for Environment, Health and Safety:

  • Accountable for satisfying all CNSC licensing requirements for operating a nuclear facility.
  • Ensuring staff are appropriately trained and qualified to perform their duties safely.
  • Being the single point of contact for all CNSC audits and inspections, and responsible for ensuring timely corrective actions.
  • Accountable for taking all reasonable precautions to protect the health and safety of all workers – a commitment to employees and a legal obligation under the Canada Labour Code.
  • Developing and maintaining hazard control systems to eliminate, prevent, minimize or control safety hazards.
  • Responding to all near misses and safety incidents to protect the health of employees and to mitigate future incidents.
  • Accountable for ensuring that site operations have no impact to members of the public and the environment during routine operations and foreseeable upset events.
  • Developing and maintaining safety analyses for the safe manufacturing of radioactive material.
  • Ensuring the protection of the environment and confirming there is no risk to the public.
  • Compiling data, reporting on key performance indicators and ensuring effective corrective actions.
  • Implementing an Observation and Coaching program.
  • Creates and delivers training related to health and safety.

Specific responsibilities for waste management:

  • Leads and oversees waste management for BWXT Medical at the Vancouver site.
  • Wastes included radioactive, chemical and biological wastes.
  • Responsible for identifying and complying with all applicable regulations including the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and supporting regulations, and federal, provincial and municipal legislative requirements.
  • Responsible for assessing the impact of new or changing regulatory requirements and assists or leads the integration of these changes into regulatory program documentation, internal processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining contractual agreements with approved waste management vendors for waste storage and disposal.
  • Responsible for the internal waste management program and procedures, and for verifying conformance.
  • Responsible for providing guidance to internal stakeholders regarding waste minimization, segregation, characterization, storage and packaging.
  • Responsible for overseeing the on-site waste inventory and scheduling waste shipments.
  • Responsible for maintaining waste characterization records.
  • Responsible for developing and reporting on waste management key performance indicators.
  • Performs internal audits of waste management processes, and supplier audits as required.
  • Creates and delivers training related to waste management.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Engineering or Science plus 10 years’ experience working with nuclear regulatory requirements, EHS requirements or other regulated business.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental laws, regulations, and standards (CLC and CSA)
  • The work requires a sound understanding of nuclear regulation of facilities, radioactive material, waste management as well as occupational, health and safety regulations.
  • Must possess ability to manage safety specialists and influence senior management and professionals within the organization.
  • Must have the analytical ability to judge the adequacy of safety and adherence to requirements and to participate in the resolution of problems.
  • Ability to carry out inspections and audits
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Excellent writing skills, particularly for procedures and internal communication
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (WORD, EXCEL and PowerPoint)
  • Experience in a nuclear facility would be an asset      
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility would be an asset

The base salary range for this position in British Columbia (CA-BC) at the start of employment is expected to be between $$90,000 and $$140,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
