We are recruiting for the position of, Manager, Systems Engineering at our Peterborough, Ontario location.




This position provides leadership for the design, development, and delivery of safety and non-safety related systems and equipment used for the remote control of fuel handling systems, specialized tooling and process plant systems in the nuclear industry.


The Manager, Systems Engineering, will report to the Engineering Division Manager. Responsibilities include functional leadership of Engineers and Technologists in the Systems Engineering department. The Systems Engineering department largely focuses on the overall integration and interfacing across our multi-disciplinary engineering group including I&C, Software and Mechanical Engineering.  The Systems Engineering group focuses on System Level design for various Fuel Handling sub-systems, tooling, medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines. This includes but not limited to requirements management / traceability, process and component level failure modes and effects analysis, testing and commissioning planning and execution, SAT based training, as well as full understanding of the customer engineering change control (ECC) processes.




At BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada you will work on technically challenging projects as part of the Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group. You will be responsible for the leadership of a team which participates in the design of equipment and systems for CANDU reactors. Projects will involve the design, development, test, and commissioning of equipment for automated fuelling machines, robotic systems, maintenance tooling, and Balance of Plant modifications for CANDU reactors and related systems. Responsibilities include functional leadership of Engineers and Technologists in the Systems Engineering department.


Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include the following:

  • Plan and monitor resources and activities in order to accomplish operational objectives including completion of projects, tasks, proposals, estimates (e.g., weekly priorities meeting, attendance and participation at production meetings, operations meetings and monthly review & estimate meetings).
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, resources needs for the department.
  • Lead process change through goal setting, process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross-functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role and responsibility in leading/driving proposal development and review, including technical and product presentations to the customer.
  • Establish departmental plans/goals/objectives including process improvement, success criteria, metrics, staff development, risks, training, activities, deliverables, resource requirements, change management, and budgets. 
  • Carry out communication meetings with staff to relay goals, objectives, expectations and other general information impacting the unit.
  • Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse group of staff, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
  • Assure compliance and adherence to processes, industry codes and standards, quality systems, policy, and contractual requirements.
  • Proactively identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the business.
  • Recruitment, staff development, succession planning, and retention for department.
  • Coaching and performance reviews for team leaders and individual contributors to achieve best in class results, including salary planning.
  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of systems design activities including, technical review and approval of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.




  • BS or MS in Engineering, Licensed by PEO.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated and process based design.
  • Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, traceability and management, interface design, process and component failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), system integration and testing, verification and validation plans, and customer engineering change control (ECC) processes.
  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, I&C, software design and manufacturing.
  • Resource management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a large group of engineers and Technologists on complex engineering projects over their complete EPC life cycles.
  • Familiarity with project schedule and financial metrics.




  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
