Manager, Pressure Boundary and Analysis Engineering


We are looking for a Manager, Pressure Boundary and Analysis Engineering for our Peterborough, Ontario site.  BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

The Manager, Pressure Boundary and Analysis Engineering provides leadership for the design, development, and delivery of safety and non-safety related systems and equipment used for the remote control of fuel handling systems. Responsibilities include functional leadership of Engineers and Technologists in the Pressure Boundary and Analysis Engineering department.




Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include the following:

  • Plan and monitor resources and activities in order to accomplish operational objectives including completion of projects, tasks, proposals, estimates (e.g., weekly priorities meeting, attendance and participation at production meetings, operations meetings and monthly review & estimate meetings).
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, resource needs for the department.
  • Lead process change through goal setting, process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
  • Provide oversight for classical and modern (finite element analysis) stress calculation techniques to perform or verify stress analysis for components, piping systems, supports, and vessels.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross-functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role and responsibility in leading/driving proposal development and review, including technical and product presentations to the customer.
  • Establish departmental plans/goals/objectives including process improvement, success criteria, metrics, staff development, risks, training, activities, deliverables, resource requirements, change management, and budgets.
  • Carry out communication meetings with staff to relay goals, objectives, expectations and other general information impacting the unit.
  • Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective mechanical design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse group of staff, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
  • Assure compliance and adherence to processes, industry codes and standards, quality systems, policy, and contractual requirements.
  • Proactively identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the business.
  • Recruitment, staff development, succession planning, and retention for department.
  • Coaching and performance reviews for team leaders and individual contributors to achieve best in class results, including salary planning.
  • Establish and maintain contracts with hourly staff to maintain consistent headcounts in line with business needs and resource profiles.
  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of systems design activities including, technical review and approval of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.




  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading complex engineering projects over their complete EPC life cycles including experience in one or more of the following areas: mechanical design, tooling design, structural assemblies, design support of complex Fuel Handling equipment, analysis, and tooling automation.
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and other ASME standards.
  • Competency in process system, pressure vessel or pressure boundary component design.
  • Resource management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a large group of engineers and technologists.
  • Familiarity with project schedule and financial metrics.




  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
