HR Generalist (12-Month Contract with Benefits)
We are looking for a HR Generalist for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Our Role:
The HR Generalist provides comprehensive support across multiple HR functions, including employee relations, recruitment, contract and immigration processes, training coordination, collective agreement administration, and DE&I initiatives for the NEC & PMI business divisions. Acting as a key liaison between business leaders, employees, and other HR stakeholders, the HR Generalist ensures HR practices are aligned with business goals, compliant with legislation, and supportive of a positive workplace culture.
Your Day to Day:
Employee Relations
- Provide support and advice on performance management, succession planning, compensation changes, and general HR best practices.
- Handle performance issues including development of Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs).
- Coach and support managers on HR policies, employment legislation, and best practices.
- Advise on employee leaves of absence (including maternity/parental), accommodation plans, and return-to-work arrangements.
- Assist in leading terminations (voluntary and involuntary), including severance calculations and documentation.
- Conduct investigations and assist with conflict management and dispute resolution.
Recruitment & Staffing
- Manage end-to-end hiring process for backfills and new hires, including preparing offer letters, liaising with agencies, and managing candidate communications.
- Support hiring managers in job description reviews and rewrites (PMI focus), ensuring accuracy and alignment.
- Lead contract renewals by tracking expiration dates, coaching managers, and negotiating terms.
- Coordinate and facilitate approvals for internal candidate promotions, including two-grade movement processes.
Immigration & Work Permits
- Monitor work permit expiration timelines and coordinate renewals.
- Serve as primary liaison for managers and employees on immigration-related questions and ONIP applications.
Labour Relations
- Track and maintain the Attendance Management Program for unionized employees.
- Identify employees for program inclusion and update relevant records and communications, making recommendations to management.
- Support Unifor collective agreement administration, including updating CBA language, wage tables, and coordination of any resulting training.
General HR Support
- Participate in regular meetings with business units to maintain visibility into workforce needs.
- Collaborate with Compensation team on wage analysis, incentive planning, and job evaluations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and provincial employment legislation and recommend policy updates as needed.
- Support data collection for compensation cycles, merit planning, and performance tracking.
- Coordinate end-of-year activities such as self-review follow-ups and vacation carryover tracking.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Human Resources Management Diploma and/or University degree. CHRL designation would be a definite asset.
- 3-5 years' experience in HR, preferably in a federally regulated and unionized environment.
- Knowledge of the Canada Labor Code and Employment Standards Act and human resource practices.
- Knowledge and experience with the Employment Equity Act or Leep Program submissions considered an asset.
- Previous familiarity with ATS systems and SAP considered an asset.
- Effective planning, organization and time management skills.
- Exceptional communication and relationship building skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and execute solution focused strategies.
- Ability to manage confidential information as well as demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making.
- Preferred experience with managing company wide initiatives (i.e. DE&I).

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $59,000 and $86,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
