Junior Radiation Surveyor

We are recruiting for a Radiation Surveyor for our facility in Kanata, Ontario. 



Under direct supervision of the Sr. Manager, Radiation Safety, and guidance of Radiation Surveyors, performs the following functions:

  • To provide technical Radiation Safety‑advice.
  • To carry out or monitor Safety & Environment Radiation Safety Procedures to provide a safe working environment within Kanata Operations and to provide a safe surrounding environment. Carries out all on‑site aspects of Radiation Surveyor duties.
  • To perform radiation safety duties that satisfy Canadian Nuclear Safety Act & Regulations and site license.  Responsible for certification of outgoing radioactive shipments.
  • This is a training level toward full Radiation Surveyor capabilities.



He/she will carry out, under the guidance of a Radiation Surveyor, until profic­ient enough to work on his/her own, the following duties:

  • Provides radiation safety advice to all operation personnel, performs radiation and contamination surveys as requested and assures that Radiation Safety Procedures are practiced.
  • Performs Transport Index measurements on all outgoing shipments.
  • Conducts in‑house and external environmental monitoring including liquid and stack releases.
  • Will acquire a working knowledge in the following areas: first line instrument maintenance and calibration, respirator fit testing, emergency response inventory, radioactivity measurement, radiation safety training, nuclear ventilation system testing, inventory of consumables and capital equipment.
  • He/she can be called upon to escort‑ radioactive material shipments in accordance with Special Arrangement Certificate from the CNSC and verifies information contained in documentation included with shipments.
  • May be sent on outside assignments to provide assistance during, radio­logical surveys, decontamination and investigation of radiation incidents.
  • Will learn to operate MCA and be able to identify unknown contaminants.
  • Will learn to perform HEPA and charcoal filter testing.
  • Performs other related duties as required.



Education and experience

Normally Post-Secondary School Graduate (3 years) in a Science discipline plus 1-3 years relevant technical experience.  Experience in a health & safety technical role is considered an asset.

Knowledge and abilities

  • Knowledge of radioactivity and radiation protection a definite asset.
  • Must have knowledge of basic chemistry.
  • Must have computer literacy and be able to manage databases, ability to create databases is a definite asset. 
  • Must be skilled in physics and mathematics to calculate radioactivity concentrations and radiation levels in all situations.
  • Must be able to inspire confidence, communicate clearly, work harmoniously with others and remain calm and objective in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to operate and interpret electronic instrumentation and assemble basic monitoring systems.
  • Must be willing and capable of successfully completing an extensive theoretical and functional training program which will provide:
  • A good knowledge of regulatory standards for radioprotection and radioactivity transport.
  • Advanced knowledge dealing with Health Physics Principles.
  • Knowledge of CNSC Regulations and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
  • Awareness of hazards of radionuclides and safety procedures for laboratories handling radioactivity and associated nuclear ventilation systems.

Recommendations and decisions

  • Must monitor and where applicable enforce compliance with CNSC Regulations, Site License and EHS Procedures.
  • In event of Radiation Incident, Junior Radiation Surveyor will immediately report it to Operations Manager and to a Radiation Surveyor if not already trained in proper response to hazards.
  • Will be expected to recommend safety procedures in conjunction with operating procedures, that will improve both safety and operating efficiency.

Consequence of errors

  • Errors in Transport Index measurements could be in direct violation of shipping Regulations, which could result in heavy fines.
  • Errors in air contamination measurements could result in internal contamination to employees.
  • Errors in contamination identification could result in long and expensive clean‑up procedures and loss of production.
  • Errors in assessment of radiation levels would endanger employees and could result in loss of license.



  • Must perform clear, concise communication on a daily basis with staff in other departments including Managers, technicians, contractors, and visitors.
  • Must use tact and persuasion in dealing with others.
  • Communication must be calm, precise, complete and technical.


Responsibility for supervision

No direct responsibility for supervising at start of appointment. Supervision of small projects, spill clean‑ups, inventory, etc., will increase with experience.

Working conditions and other distinguishing aspects

  • Nuclear Energy Worker.
  • Required to wear a respirator, including SCBA gear.
  • May be required to work under unusual conditions of high airborne or loose contamination or elevated radiation fields.
  • Will assist fire fighters in event of active area fire.
  • Expected to work overtime, at all hours, with minimum advance notice.
  • May be called out at any time during off‑hours to investigate a radiation alarm.
