BWXT Medical Ltd. is seeking an Heating and Power Service Mechanic at its production facility in Kanata, Ontario Canada.
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the incumbent is responsible for:
- Using good mechanical design principles, installs or modifies mechanical equipment to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of systems;
- Maintaining and following quality programs, systems and procedures necessary to assure BWXT Medical Ltd. Of ISO/GMP compliance;
- Performing maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and systems using up‑to‑date trade practices;
- Operating heating and power equipment and systems to ensure safe, efficient performance of systems and meet required environmental conditions within buildings;
- Monitors work activities in an effort to identify and implement any improvements that will provide improved service, functions or repair.
WORK PERFORMED:
- Working with blueprints, schematics and layouts, assembles, installs and maintains mechanical equipment such as high- and low-pressure steam, condense return, chilled water, air conditioning and ventilation systems, water treatment, water distribution and sewage systems, compressed air distribution systems and pneumatic control equipment.
- Operates the heating and power systems and all associated equipment. Responsible for generation and distribution of steam, chilled water and compressed air and operation of HVAC equipment and gas supply on the entire site. Assesses operating problems and makes necessary adjustments and emergency repairs.
- Operates computer-controlled Building Management System to ensure efficient and effective operation of environmental and energy management systems.
- Performs chemical tests and makes adjustments to water treatment systems as necessary to ensure proper protection for boiler systems and cooling tower equipment.
- Using analytical test equipment (e.g., velometers, manometers, vibration meter, pH meters, etc.). Conducts tests and analyzes results to determine causes of malfunctions and develop remedial action. Carry out necessary repairs or advise supervisor with appropriate recommendations.
- In conjunction with immediate supervisor, develops test procedures and maintenance programs for critical safety systems and control equipment to comply with AECB regulations, Labour Canada regulations, GMP and ISO‑9000 requirements. Follows all pertinent codes and regulatory requirements when making mechanical installations and alterations.
- Develops primary layout designs and plumbing and ventilation systems and, in cooperation with in‑house technical staff and outside engineering consultants, inputs to engineering design and specification of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Collects data necessary to effectively carry out and expand a computerized Preventive Maintenance Program for critical equipment. Carries out test methods and maintenance procedures for mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of equipment. Notifies Supervisor when spare parts inventory needs replacement.
- Provides accurately marked up prints to indicate heating and other mechanical system changes so that as‑built drawing records can be revised and kept current.
- Provides trades support to Emergency Response Team and as such may be called upon to take part in initial investigation and carry out appropriate and quick actions in response to any type of emergency situation on site.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Provincial Certification ‑ 4th Class Stationary Engineer (preferred). Ontario Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certificate and at least 5 years’ experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Operation of high- and low-pressure steam heating systems.
- Reads blueprints and schematics.
- Performs freehand layout sketches.
- Knowledgeable of appropriate code requirements.
- Operates machine shop tools (e.g., drill, lathe, and grinder).
- Welding using electric arc and acetylene ‑ certificate desirable.
- Knowledgeable of pneumatics related to building control systems, operation and maintenance of HVAC systems.
- Knowledgeable in the use of appropriate test equipment.
- Competent in operation of computerized building management system.
- Knowledge of fuels, combustion, hydraulics, lubrications and water treatments.
COMMUNICATIONS:
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Maintains good rapport with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Provides clear concise written reports/records as required.
- Must be able to work effectively with others and in a team setting.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be required to be on standby during off hours.
- May be required to work unscheduled/scheduled overtime on weekends and evenings.
- Works in confined spaces and at heights.
- Works in proximity to hot pipes, high- and low-pressure steam.
- Nuclear Energy Worker.
- Subject to safety rules and regulations as appropriate to the job.
- Required to work in all areas of BWXT Medical's Kanata facility both inside and outside buildings and subject to work in all weather conditions.
- Required to wear special protective apparel and respirators, which are awkward or uncomfortable, to perform specific jobs such as repairs to Production cells.
- Heavy physical force is sometimes required.
