We are looking for motivated college students to join our highly-skilled team of NDE Examiners for an exciting summer internship opportunity at our Mt. Vernon, IN location!

At BWXT, our interns perform challenging tasks in their field of study while developing and delivering unique engineering solutions for use in a nuclear environment. Our interns work collaboratively as part of our Quality Assurance Department’s team of NDT Level III’s (NDE Examiners) and will create/update work instructions and procedures, assist with product and/or NDE Inspection tooling designs, perform testing and analysis, and assist with project management and the procurement of materials as needed.  A BWXT internship not only provides valuable on the job training but allows you to be a part of something bigger!

 

Primary responsibilities for NDT Interns include:

  • Follow and comply with all rules related to safety, operations, and security.
  • Work in close cooperation with NDT Engineering, Weld Engineering, Welders and Quality Engineering.
  • Assist in evaluating test results and make accept/reject decisions in accordance with procedure criteria and provide written documentation as required.
  • Assist in identifying defects, remove defects when directed using proper hand tools, prepare resultant cavities suitably for welding, chart general locations of defective areas, document non-relevant conditions with charts/sketches and proper written conclusions, maintain proper preheat controls during tests.
  • Inform proper personnel of test results.
  • May be required to set up and work from scaffolding, move major scaffolding after initial set-up, move and re-set preheat equipment as required to maintain preheat controls.
  • Complete and maintain all documentation as directed by work instructions and policies.
  • Follow instructions per routings, sketches, prints, procedures, manuals, and records as required to perform assigned inspections.
  • Report non-conformances on proper documentation and/or logs; complete required documents providing verification of work performed.
  • When required, move hardware to other areas with material handling equipment.
  • Verify weld fit ups using basic gages.

 

 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in a close tolerance manufacturing and fabrication environment highly preferred.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination (to include eye exam) post-hire
  • Due to our work with the federal government, U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship is required.

Successful candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program and working toward a major in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Technology, or a similar technical course of study.  Additionally, students must be at a sophomore standing or above at the time the internship begins and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Knowledge of blueprint reading and/or Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.  Due to our work with the federal government, U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship is required for this position.

BWXT offers paid internships along with a housing stipend for those interns whose home of record is more than 50 miles from Mount Vernon.  Internships will last approximately 10-12 weeks. At the end of the internship, each intern has the opportunity to present their completed work/ assigned projects to the team.
