BWXT is currently seeking a Software Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA location!


The Software Engineer is part of a team responsible for the design, build and support of new and existing custom automated manufacturing and inspection systems used in the Lynchburg manufacturing facility.  The candidate will perform software development for both new and existing applications and automated systems.


Job Description/Duties:

  • Works cooperatively with teams of engineers (mechanical, electrical and software) and internal customers to design, build, maintain, and upgrade custom automated process control and data acquisition systems that support manufacturing, quality control, and other plant operations.
  • Develops software applications for automated equipment/systems including motion control, data acquisition, databases interactions, and operator interfaces using .Net or CVI on Windows based platforms.
  • Develops vision system and other post inspection analysis applications.
  • Integrates applications/systems with third-party hardware and software.
  • Generates and executes system and software test plans and develops user manuals for the system/machine.
  • Supports engineers and technicians in the assembly, installation, trouble-shooting, maintenance, and upgrade of new and existing systems.
  • This position is primarily for software development but the engineer may perform other (Mechanical or Electrical) design tasks on occasion as skills and needs allow.  These may include CAD or electrical hardware design and/or PLC programming.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university/program is required.  Internal candidates with a Physics Degree who are already on the Engineering Ladder are also eligible.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Should have knowledge of, or be willing to develop, the following software skills:
    • VB, C#, C
    • Motion Control (Delta Tau/Omron, Galil)
    • Image Analysis (National Instruments, Halcon, Matrox)
    • Git, TFS/Azure Devops
    • PLC (Allen Bradley/Rockwell)
  • Any additional knowledge or previous experience in software development and/or with automation/automated equipment/systems is a plus.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is required.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
