Safety Specialist -  BWX Technologies, Inc.  -  Lynchburg, VA

 

Position Summary:

 

The Safety Technician will work under the supervision of the Site Project Manager and Field Operations Manager to support the safety and health activities associated with Deactivation and Disposition, Construction and Refurbishment projects at a Department of Energy nuclear facility. The Safety Technician will actively support the company's safety programs designed to prevent occupational injury and illness.

 

Description of Essential Duties:

 

  • Perform daily calibration and checks of equipment used to monitor for physical, chemical, and biological hazards. Maintain an accurate inventory of the equipment and perform repairs as necessary.
  • Prepare and submit procurement forms for sampling equipment and supplies.
  • Track and schedule calibration for all safety and industrial hygiene equipment.
  • Perform monitoring of employees and work areas for chemical hazards such as asbestos, lead, and silica.
  • Complete chain of custody forms for onsite and offsite analysis of samples, and package samples for shipping.
  • Perform annual inspection, tagging, and logging of in-service fall protection equipment such as harnesses, self-retracting lanyards, and beam clamps.
  • Follow all applicable Federal, State and Local health and safety regulations for the Project.
  • Assist with ensuring employees are in compliance with the task work document and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
  • Communicate and enforce the PEP Health and Safety Plan (HASP), on the project and with the Project Team.
  • Abide by all customer health and safety procedures applicable to the project.
  • Develop and provide project specific health and safety training for all project personnel.
  • Follow all requirements and plans found in the Radiation Work Permits and other project documents.
  • Conduct worksite health and safety assessments and audits, as required by site procedures.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority, as required.
  • Facilitate and drive timely resolution of project Health and Safety emergent issues.
  • Communicate clearly, constructively, and concisely with other project team members and stakeholders on all Health and Safety-related issues.
  • Participate in all FWP pre-job walk downs and briefs, and daily pre-job briefs.
    Ensure the maintenance of all FFD requirements for personnel on the Team
  • Perform other safety-related tasks as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High School level education required. Specialized training, Associate's or Bachelor's Degree is preferred and a plus.
  • A minimum of 3 years of previous jobsite safety experience.
  • Ability to work in a construction atmosphere, climb, and wear respirator equipment
  • Ability to prioritize job duties and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written skills to effectively communicate with employees, supervisors and customers.
  • Strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Previous experience in the nuclear or radiological field is desirable.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen -  no dual citizenship.
  • A current DOE "L" security clearance, or above, is strongly preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain appropriate radiological controls and other necessary qualifications
