BWXT is currently seeking a Safety Analysis Manager for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

 

BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

 

The Safety Analysis Manager will lead a team comprised of Launch Safety Analysts and Nuclear Reactor Safety Analysts on projects relevant to advanced reactors being developed by BWXT Advanced Technologies. This position will require a mix of engineering technical knowledge and interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities across internal and external teams.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Manage an internal team of mission safety analysts and nuclear safety analysts.
  • Lead the development of safety methods and strategies for the very unique reactor types spanning terrestrial mobile reactors, lunar reactors, nuclear thermal and electric propulsion concepts, etc.
  • Work with partners (internal and external) on supporting the launch approval process for lunar or orbital reactors.
  • Interact with various safety and regulatory authorities, and customers.
  • Develop work scope, proposal inputs, schedules for safety analysis work as the need arises.

 

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear or similar discipline) is required.
  • Must have at least ten (10) years of experience in nuclear reactor safety.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of prior management experience, or demonstrated performance in team leadership.
  • Knowledge of safety analyses such as hazard analyses, computational techniques and evaluation models, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, fault trees, safety basis event identification, and the many aspects of code qualification is required.
  • Must have demonstrable ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of nuclear quality assurance requirements is required.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and regulators.
  • Familiarity or prior experience with the NSPM-20 Launch approval process is preferred.
  • Travel (<20%) domestic and international is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
