BWXT is currently seeking a Research Engineer for its location in Lynchburg, VA!

The Research Engineer will fulfill the lead engineer role on a variety of projects including: material characterizations, design of specialized test equipment/experiments, planning and implementing laboratory upgrades, managing laboratory projects including cost and schedule. Hands-on laboratory work including working directly with radioactive materials is required.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Provide support to an on-site manufacturing facility.
  • Standardize in-process monitoring including chemical and mechanical properties.
  • Routine and customize analyses to resolve production issues, typically through qualitative elemental analysis utilizing SEM/EDS and quantitative analysis utilizing electron microprobe.
  • Design new analysis methods including selection of instruments and authoring of technical procedures.
  • Work closely with instrument operators to ensure analysis methods are appropriate for the issue at-hand.
  • Author/maintain area operating procedures and technical procedures.
  • Interpret test data and author of technical reports.
  • Work directly with radioactive materials in a safe manner.
  • Plan and implement laboratory upgrades including selection and procurement of equipment, process planning, and supporting formal safety/licensing evaluations.
  • Participate in fuel development efforts including process development and characterizations.

 

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or an ABET- accredited Engineering program is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment. 
  • Familiarity with the following is required:
    • Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS).
    • X-ray diffraction analysis.
    • Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy for quantitative microanalysis.
    • Metallographic sample preparation techniques.
    • Weld attribute evaluation using standard microscopy techniques.
    • Heat treatment processes and operation of high temperature furnaces.
    • General laboratory practices including working with hazardous chemicals.
    • Quality assurance best practices including documentation and handling of data/records.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
