BWXT is currently seeking a Process Engineer – TRISO Fuels for its Lynchburg, VA location!


Job Description/Duties:

  • Provides engineering support for the development and fabrication of Uranium Based Fuels (both metallic and ceramic) for commercial applications such as Next Generation Nuclear Power (TRISO Fuel), Medical Isotopes and Research Reactors.
  • Participates in the re-start and testing of existing equipment and the deployment of new production line(s).
  • Supports production operations as the technical lead and subject matter expert for the assigned process responsibility.
  • Supports shop floor operations, resolution of fabrication issues and generates process improvement ideas. 
  • Prepares Operating Procedures and Electronic Shop Floor Routings.
  • Assists in the development of equipment designs and fabrication methods to successfully fabricate Uranium Based Fuels.  Generates Functional Specifications for equipment that supports the process.
  • Creates training plans for shop floor personnel and front line managers and participates in the training activities.
  • Follows BWXT established change management and Safety Evaluation processes.
  • Evaluates process data to determine efficiencies and consistency of process.  Makes recommended modifications/improvements based upon data evaluation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET Accredited Institution is required.  Internal candidates with a Physics Degree who are already on the Engineering Ladder are also eligible.  B.S. Degree in Chemical, Materials or Mechanical Engineering is preferred. Advanced Degree is desired.
  • Must possess at least five (5) years of related experience.
  • A background in Sol-Gel processing, CVD/PVD coating, fluid bed heat treatment and/or nuclear chemistry processing for Next Generation Nuclear fuels (TRISO) is desired.
  • Knowledge of Uranium Based Fuel Processing in the preparation of ceramic/metallic powders (to include the processing of these powders) is desired.
  • Must possess previous experience with design, refurbishment, and/or deployment of ceramic powder manufacturing equipment (furnaces, size classification, chemical reactors).
  • Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is required.
  • Must demonstrate excellent experience in authoring technical reports.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Must possess proven ability in leading multi-discipline teams.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
