BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group - Lynchburg is currently seeking an Operations Technician for its Lynchburg, VA location!

 

 

The Operations Technician is responsible for supporting Advanced Fuel research and development operations at the Lynchburg Technology Center. This group is one of five discrete laboratory operations within LTC, namely, Nuclear Materials Engineering (NME), Radioisotope & Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (RACL), Nondestructive Evaluation & Inspection Systems (NDE&IS), Advanced Fuels (AF), and Metallurgical Laboratory (MET). This organization operates several radioactive facilities including a failure analysis laboratory, mechanical testing laboratory, machine shop, radiochemistry laboratory, nuclear counting laboratory, metals analysis laboratory, and four fuel-handling hot cells.

 

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the operator for a prototypic fuel manufacturing process, working in gloveboxes.
  • Acts as the point of contact for assigned processing areas.
  • Assists in generation and revision of area operating procedures (AOPs) and technical procedures (TPs) for the assigned processing areas.
  • Supports installation and on-site testing of equipment.
  • Assists with analyzing and resolving manufacturing issues.
  • Mentors and trains new operators.
  • Serves as an area lead for pilot scale facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an Associate’s degree in a technical field OR a high school diploma or equivalent plus four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Previous experience working in a radiologically controlled environment.
  • Previous experience handling fuel and working in gloveboxes.
  • Must possess a strong commitment to safety culture and willingness to ensure compliance to all codes and standards.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant radiological experience.
  • A Diploma/Certificate in a related field (such as Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science).
  • Previous experience loading and unloading furnaces and other pieces of manufacturing equipment.
  • Proficiency with various metallographic operations including sample preparation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory methods and interpretation of results.
  • Prior experience with dimensional inspection techniques and/or familiarity with interpretation of dimensional data – optical comparator and/or CNC machines – is a plus.
  • Familiarity with imaging equipment – digital camera and/or microscope imaging – is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and process management software (i.e. Solumina).
  • Active DOD or DOE security clearance.
