BWXT is currently seeking a Nuclear Core Design Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA—Ramsey Place location!

 

The Advanced Technology (AT) group at BWXT designs and develops innovative nuclear reactors and related systems for internal and external customers. AT Engineering is seeking a Nuclear Core Design Engineer to assist in the development of these systems. The Nuclear Core Design Engineer needs to have background and knowledge in nuclear reactor phenomena, neutronic calculations, thermal-hydraulics, modeling, and simulation tools.

Job Description/Duties:

  • Performs analysis of advanced core designs which includes a variety of fuel systems, cycle and coolant types.
  • Coordinates multiple engineering disciplines across joint organizational teams.
  • Performs work on a broad scope of studies, from preconceptual through reference design.
  • Performs work using an integrated approach for neutronics, thermal hydraulics, mechanical/stress, and safety analysis, to achieve accelerated reactor design development.
  • Works in a core design team contributing to a variety of projects.

 

Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience in thermal analysis for nuclear reactor core design.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to write and deliver high quality technical reports and documentation, including presentations to customers, regulators, and other organizations.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenships.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

 

Preferred skills:

  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Prior experience with verification and validation of thermal analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with plant analysis tools such as RELAP5-3D or TRACE. Experience with subchannel codes.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as FORTRAN, Python, C, C++ in a Linux environment.
