BWXT is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

 

The Mechanical Engineer will be part of a diverse and multi-discipline team working on a variety of projects including next generation reactor design, reactor component/equipment development, medical isotopes, and advanced manufacturing technology development. This role is a multi-functioning, multi-faceted role requiring an individual with a wide range of capabilities.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight on project/task specific work including delegating, reviewing, and self-performing activities.
  • Perform component stress analyses to include ASME Code based analyses.
  • Use ANSYS, LS Dyna, and/or other computer codes to analyze components.  
  • Interface with design and manufacturing personnel to optimize and fabricate designs.
  • Utilize 3D CAD (ex. SolidWorks) to manipulate design models for analysis.
  • Interpret detailed drawings for use in calculations.
  • Perform engineering calculations in support of design/modeling activities.
  • Perform project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.).
  • Specify procurement requirements for mechanical components.
  • Prepare packages of drawings and associated documentation in accordance with approved standards, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare procurement packages to send to manufacturing.
  • Review engineering drawings for correctness, tolerances and manufacturability.
  • Work closely with engineering, purchasing, production, and other teams to ensure design work meets requirements.
  • Work with data management tools to organize and manage project data.
  • Evaluate and suggest improvements to product designs and design/drafting processes.
  • Evaluate and suggest improvements to quality related processes as it relates to 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and ASME NQA-1 Quality Assurance programs and design/drafting activities.

 

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, or Structural) from an ABET-accredited university is required.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in design engineering is required.
  • Must be knowledgeable with stress analysis computer systems.
  • Must be knowledgeable with 3D CAD systems and design engineering techniques relative to the development of complex parts, assemblies, and systems.
  • Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must possess the ability and attitude to learn a variety of new procedures, processes and tools.
  • Must have an understanding of design control and configuration control concepts.
  • A general knowledge of project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.) is required.
  • Must be able to effectively prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations.
  • Must be proficient in SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
  • Travel (<20%) domestic and international is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

  

Additional Desired Skillsets:

  • Proficient in ANSYS.
  • Proficient in Solidworks.
  • Proficient in ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Standard.
  • Proficient in computer programming codes (ex. C++, Fortran, Python, etc.).
  • Proficient in ASME Section III of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Prior experience in gas cooled reactor nuclear fuel mechanical design.
  • Prior hands-on experience and ability to work in a shop environment.
  • Possess a general knowledge of manufacturing processes including product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials.
