BWXT is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA location!

The Mechanical Engineer is a part of a team that is responsible for the design, building and support of new and existing custom automated manufacturing and inspection systems used in the Lynchburg manufacturing facility.  


Job Description/Duties:

  • Works cooperatively with teams of mechanical, electrical and software engineers, and internal customers, to design, build, upgrade, and maintain new and existing custom automated manufacturing and inspection systems that support manufacturing, quality control, and other plant operations.
  • Develops concepts and cost and schedule estimates and writes proposals/reports as necessary in support of project initiation. 
  • Performs machine / tool design and hardware selection / purchase including: machine bases, enclosures, glove boxes, part fixturing/handling, precision motion (servo controlled) positioning systems, actuators, sensors, switches, valves, pneumatics, hydraulics, cable management, etc.
  • Conducts/leads design reviews to gain approval of new system concepts.
  • Documents designs via build-to-print assembly and detailed drawings, and hydraulic / pneumatic schematics, and collaborates with the Tool Design unit to incorporate designs into their drawing system.
  • Supports machine shop and technicians in their fabrication, assembly, installation, trouble-shooting, and maintenance of the systems.
  • Supports electrical and software team members in the test-and-debug of the systems.
  • Generates system documentation such as maintenance manuals, set-up procedures, preventive maintenance charts, and spare part list, and collaborates with Industrial Engineering to incorporate into their SAP system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university is required.  A Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience is required.
  • Should be able to demonstrate effective working knowledge of CAD, preferably in Solid Edge, and/or be willing to work and train to develop these skill sets.
  • Should be able to demonstrate effective working knowledge of machine and/or tool design and/or fabrication, or be willing to work and train to develop this knowledge.
  • Any additional knowledge or previous experience in mechanical engineering design is a plus.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is required.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
