BWXT is currently seeking a Mechanical Design & Test Engineering Manager for its Lynchburg, VA – Ramsey Place location!


The Advanced Technology (AT) group at BWXT designs and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, medical isotope solutions, and related systems for internal and external customers. AT Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design & Test Engineering Manager to assist in the management and development of these systems.


The Mechanical Design & Test Engineering Manager will lead and manage teams relevant to Advanced Technologies programs and projects involving mechanical design and associated testing of newly developed components/systems and products. The ideal candidate will possess a substantial Engineering background and sufficient knowledge in manufacturing and testing of nuclear fuels/fueled components as well as and supporting power systems. He or she must have exceptional interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities simultaneously across joint organizational teams. 


Job Description/Duties:

  • Understand and execute:
    • Manufacturing and processes minded in-tandem with design engineering techniques relative to the development of fuel mechanical design, complex nuclear related components and the necessary testing for viability and/or acceptance resulting in prototyping and implementation.
    • Assembly, testing and evaluation/inspection of fuels/fuel related mechanical components and nuclear related components and systems.
    • Coordination and/or working with teams in the generation of procedures, processes and tools within various stages of design/development.
    • Coordination of multiple engineering activities simultaneously within a joint organizational team.
    • Project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.).
    • Design control and configuration control concepts.
    • Specify procurement requirements for mechanical components.
    • Supplier interface for procured components and facilitating Engineering acceptance prior to implementation.
  • Familiar with and have worked within design and implementation of designs involving ASME Code Sections (i.e. III, VII, etc.).
  • Familiar with and have worked within design and implementation of designs involving ANSI B31.1 and others.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Preference given to those candidates with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Fifteen (15) years’ experience in mechanical or mechanical systems design relative to the development of complex electro/mechanical tools and systems resulting in design/manufacturing/construction implementation required.
  • Fifteen to twenty (15-20) years’ experience in mechanical systems design resulting in manufacturing/construction implementation preferred.
  • Twenty (20) years management or supervisory experience required.
  • Must possess the ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Travel (<20%) domestic and international.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
