BWXT is currently seeking a Materials Engineering & Testing Manager for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new terrestrial nuclear reactors, space fission systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

 

Advanced Technologies is currently seeking a Materials Engineering and Testing Manager to lead a team who are responsible for the selection, property determination, testing and qualification of materials for high-temperature nuclear reactors. The manager will guide and oversee the team to ensure that materials are evaluated for performance, reliability, and safety under reactor conditions.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Lead and manage a team of materials engineers and technologists in the development and execution of comprehensive testing plans for materials used in high-temperature nuclear reactors.
  • Coordinate material qualification processes, ensuring compliance with stringent nuclear and aerospace requirements.
  • Guide the team in identifying material solutions that meet design requirements and verifying their performance through testing.
  • Provide strategic direction and support for risk assessments and development projects aimed at improving material readiness levels (MRL/TRL) for nuclear and space applications.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment to promote knowledge sharing, technical excellence, and continuous learning and improvement.
  • Provide regular, constructive feedback to team members, recognizing their achievements and contributions.
  • Ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all members. 

 

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a technical field of study related to materials engineering or science (e.g. Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, etc.) is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience in field or in a related field in addition to industry related technical experience. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in materials science, including the processing, structure, and performance of high-temperature metallic materials.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

 

Additional Desired Skillsets:

  • Preference given to those who have 5+ more years technical experience in related field.
  • Proven experience in material qualification for nuclear and/or aerospace applications
  • Advanced knowledge of material characterization techniques, such as electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopy.
  • Experience working in an NQA-1 or ISO standard quality environment.
  • Hands-on attitude with the ability to effectively lead, mentor, and motivate a team of individual contributors.

Pay: $98,000 - $154,000

 

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $98,000 and $154,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.  The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
