BWXT is currently seeking a Licensing & Safety Analysis Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA location!


The Licensing & Safety Analysis Engineer leads safety disciplines through the evaluation of changes in functional areas (i.e., process areas) of the facility. The Engineer must be available to work nights and weekends in the instance of an EOC activation.


Job Description/Duties:

  • Reviews facility/process change management submittals for completeness and assesses impact to the site Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) License.
  • Coordinates Integrated Safety Reviews with Chemical, Fire Protection, Nuclear Criticality, and Radiation Safety disciplines.
  • Leads formal Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) for facility/process changes, utilizing Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) Methodology (HAZIDs, HAZOPs, FMEA, LOPAs).
  • Performs quality reviews of facility/process changes prior approval to assure appropriate level of review has occurred, appropriate level of failure scenario analysis development/documentation has occurred, safety analysis update documentation is complete and need for scenario or SAR revision has been thoroughly evaluated by safety disciplines.
  • Provides leadership to operational engineers and area management in maintaining process description within safety basis documentation.
  • Performs final review of safety basis revision(s), to assure adequate integration and document consistency.
  • Provide operational support and interfaces with leadership in functional areas (i.e. process areas) of the facility by working with area management and process engineers to understand planned process changes and upgrades.
  • Provides leadership as the primary safety contact facility/process changes.
  • Attends project team meetings.
  • Performs audits of safety basis documents.
  • Serves as backup Licensing Manager as needed.
  • Assists safety disciplines with response to NRC and State inspection questions that regard the safety basis.
  • Responds to the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) when activation occurs.
  • Oversees all submittals to the NRC for license amendments and regulatory actions pertaining to new company contracts (TRISO, Casting Alloying and Enrichment Adjustment, SCO, NSA, and others).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university. Internal candidates with a Physics Degree who are already on the Engineering Ladder are also eligible.
  • Must possess at least four (4) years of related experience.
  • Must have demonstrable knowledge of Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) Methodology or Process Safety Management - HAZIDs, HAZOPs, FMEA, LOPAs.
  • Prior experience working with NRC License is preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities is required.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a rapidly changing environment is required.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is required.
  • Must be a US Citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearance.
