BWXT is currently seeking an Instrumentation Design and Test Engineer Research Engineer for its Lynchburg, VA – Ramsey Place location!

 

 

The Instrumentation Design and Test Engineer will collaborate with a high-performing, innovative, and multi-disciplinary team to work on advanced micro reactor designs for various internal and external stakeholders. These advanced rectors require innovative solutions to provide autonomous reactor controls utilizing advanced instrumentation. Additionally, test equipment and facilities will be required to perform testing necessary to validate the advanced reactor designs. Job Description/Duties:

 

  • Select and implement nuclear instrumentation for use in determining reactor power for the application of reactor autonomous control in advanced high temperature gas reactors.
  • Perform research on the current state of the art.
  • Develop instrumentation specifications for various advanced reactor designs.
  • Engage vendors on instrumentation selection.
  • Create space, weight, and cost estimates for selected instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with the control systems lead to Integrate instrumentation into the autonomous reactor control scheme.
  • Determine necessary testing required to verify the instrumentation selection will meet the desired requirements.
  • Select, implement, and operate the instrumentation used for test facilities/equipment for the testing of advanced reactor designs ranging from small separate effects test to scaled model flow testing.
  • Select the proper instrumentation to meet the needs of various test equipment and facilities based on the requirements of a given test which include pressure and differential pressure, temperature, fluid flow, flow visualization, vibration, torque, etc.

 

Job Qualifications/Requirements:

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET-accredited university is required in one of the following fields: Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Must have a minimum of 4 years of experience.
  • Must be a US citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Prior knowledge on nuclear reactor systems.
  • Experience in the specification of requirements for, or in the development of, advanced sensors.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation for reactor monitoring and control including measurement of neutron flux is preferred.
  • Experience with instrumentation used in test equipment for mechanical, fluid flow, and/or heat transfer testing is preferred.
