Position Overview:
The Field Operations Technician is a highly technical position, requiring a strong understanding of the principles of radiation safety, plant operations, and the compliance with safety policies and regulations. The Field Operations Technician must be able to work on a broad range of project types, including D&D, installation, and modifications, while working in different and changing environments. The Field Operations Technician must be able to work with a wide range of specialized equipment and tools. They must have strong problem-solving abilities and be able to work well as part of a team. They must also be able to follow strict safety protocols and regulations, as the work they do can have significant implications for public health and safety.

On-site at the Technical Services Group Lynchburg, VA project.
- Your Day to Day as a Field Operations Technician:
- Report to the Project Manager and Field Operations Manager
- Perform field demolition of buildings (or structures), equipment, and systems (radiological and non-radiological)
- Perform installation and modification activities
- Ready your assigned work site each day for project work by preparing materials, tools, and equipment.
- Implement projects using Field Work Package (FWP) instructions / Work Orders / JHAs, under the direction of the Field Operations Manager or Field Operations Supervisor.
- Perform radiological work in a radiological environment, or as defined as decontamination, removal, and/or disposal of radioactively contaminated materials and equipment
- Wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for protection from the hazards associated with the performance of assigned tasks. PPE includes but is not limited to anti-contamination clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, goggles, face shields, hard hats, gloves, harness and respirators.
- Comply with health and safety regulations when operating equipment or walking in all areas of the site
- Maintain a productive and safe pace of assigned activities to complete all assigned tasks within time constraints
- Obtain and maintain all certifications required for work
- Leave construction equipment and tools clean, organized, and stored in an orderly fashion after each use
- Dispose of debris and hazardous materials according to customer and local environmental standards and regulations
- Perform field walk-downs in preparation for project scope estimations, readiness reviews, and closeout as directed by the Field Operations Manager or Field Operations Supervisor.
Education / Qualifications:
- Minimum of four years relevant experience.
- Individual must submit to and successfully pass a BWXT background check and initial drug screen and periodic drug and alcohol screening exams.
- Individual must meet and maintain all the requirements and conditions for employment with BWXT TSG as outlined in the company policies
- Three years of experience as a minimum in a similar work environment is preferred (D&D, modifications, and or installations)
- Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship
- Must hold at least a “L” level U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, with the ability to upgrade to a “Q” clearance
- Prior Nuclear experience in a radiologically controlled environment
Skills:
- Must have ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, interconnection drawings, P&IDs, and procedures.
- Must be able to build complex assemblies using drawings or detailed work instructions.
- Must have strong defect recognition skills.
- Must have the ability to interact with peers and support the team for continuous improvement
- Proficiency in cable routing is useful.
- Electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and or controls experience is preferred.
Physical Abilities:
- Ability to work from heights; work from ladders, scaffolds, and personnel lifts. Capable of climbing and lifting.
- Possess experience in small equipment operations (e.g., Genie material lifts, Genie personnel lifts, pallet jacks, and hydraulic jacks).
- Walk to and from work area; approximately a quarter mile + each way between work trailer and work area - daily.
- Stand during 10-hour shift; generally required to be on feet for each 10-hour shift; there is no opportunity for sitting at work area - daily.
- Stoop, bend, crouch, crawl, and kneel – frequently.
- Push and pull - frequently.
- Climb stairs and ladders - frequently.
- Maintain balance – constantly.
- Use hands for tools or controls - constantly.
- Move and lift items (material and equipment) of all sizes, and weights ranging from < 20lbs, to > 50lbs - frequently.
- Lift and operate tools – frequently.
- Work in noisy, dirty, isolated or crowded environments - frequently.
- Work with exposure to factors such as temperature variations, fumes, moving machinery, and toxic materials - frequently.
- Dress-out in Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment: don and wear PCs on a daily basis, to include protective work suits, safety shoes, gloves, foot rubbers, harnesses, and respiratory equipment such as a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) - daily.
Pay: $64,000 - $101,000
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $64,000 and $101,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
