BWXT is currently seeking an Export/Classification Officer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!


BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.


The Export/Classification Officer will be responsible for oversight of the BWXT Advanced Technologies Export Control Program and will also serve as a derivative classifier for a variety of DoD and DOE projects involving nuclear technologies.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Make export control determinations for:
    • Engineering products and deliverables.
    • Hardware for nuclear applications.
  • Make classification determinations according to contract requirements and security classification guides in support of project managers and security specialists.
  • Work with BWXT technical and legal teams to resolve classification questions or discrepancies.
  • Work with government and non-government customers to resolve classification questions or discrepancies.
  • Review subcontractor export control and classification programs.
  • Engage in first review of end user certificates/statement.
  • Coordinate with applicable business, technical and legal teams on edits to such certificates/statement.


Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in Engineering (Nuclear, Mechanical, etc.) from an ABET-accredited university is preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of six (6) years of experience in export control, preferably in the nuclear field.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the ITAR and EAR.
  • Must be able to analyze and determine export controls jurisdictions as well as appropriate, related classifications under either the ITAR or EAR.
  • Must have experience with classification implementation and determination according to regulations, contracts and classification guides, preferably as a Derivative Classifier.
  • Must have demonstrated experience working with project teams, customers and suppliers.
  • Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
  • Must be a proven team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must have exceptional interpersonal skills to coordinate multiple licensing activities simultaneously across joint organizational teams.
  • Substantial engineering background and knowledge of nuclear technology, including terrestrial and space, nuclear systems is preferred. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
