Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) Director


BWXT Technical Services Group (“BWXT TSG”) has needs across TSG’s various government project locations for senior level management candidates in the area of Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality.


Job Description and Requirements:


  • Act in senior leadership role with high level of responsibility, accountability and impact on the organization through management, oversight and direction of functional programs inclusive of staff managers, supervisors, professionals, and skilled workers.


  • Act independently, exercise judgment and make critical decisions under very limited supervision and review.


  • Directly supervise department-level functional area managers.


  • Oversee and directly manage cost centers, including development and maintenance of detailed staffing and budget plans.


  • Establish strategic goals, implement key initiatives and review results for plant site.


  • Act with fiduciary responsibility towards contractual deliverables, cost consciousness and corporate goals.


  • Plan, organize and assign skill-specific work to staff and/or people performing similar or related functions. Set goals and determine individual training, qualification, and coaching needs.


  • Manage cross-functional organization teams to solve site-wide problems and improve business processes.


  • Routinely interface with DOE management and staff to solicit feedback, discuss progress of improvement initiatives, and resolve issues.


  • Ensures Quality Assurance services are being properly executed and the needs of the company are met.


  • Directs all activities associated with the development and implementation of Quality Assurance policies, procedures and systems.


Job Requirements:


  • Ability to use technical competence coupled with business knowledge to deliver integrated management solutions for complex operational and continuous improvement needs.


  • Ability to contribute functional expertise and management insight to corporate business proposal initiatives and due diligence assessments.


  • Ability to have major impact on organizational success and productivity, with extensive latitude for independent judgment.


  • Broad knowledge of and experience developing, implementing, and directing DOE Integrated Safety Management System, occupational medicine, industrial safety/hygiene, radiation protection, fire protection, environmental compliance, electrical safety, construction oversight, decontamination/decommissioning, security, and nuclear material control and accountability programs.


  • Skill and ability to perform critical strategic tasks; interpret broad strategic requirements; and develop/execute comprehensive improvement plans.


  • Ability to communicate at the highest levels with corporate leadership (including teaming partners) and customer/client leadership.


  • Ability to manage staff and programs responsible for highly advanced performance involving occupational medicine, health physics, industrial hygiene/safety, environmental protection, fire protection with expert knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, procedures and reporting requirements.


  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills (includes speaking and writing), reasoning ability, and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.


  • Ability to perform substantially varied and complex duties.


  • Ability to handle the most complex issues and questions that cannot be handled by lower levels.


  • Ability to adapt procedures and processes as necessary to meet current and changing needs/objectives.


  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “L” or “Q” Clearance as required by the position.


Education Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or related science.
  • 15 years of experience managing/supporting ESH&Q or related technical field.
  • 7 years of experience at a nuclear facility in a management role.
