BWXT is currently seeking a CAD Administrator for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!


BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.


The CAD Administrator/Mechanical Draftsperson will be part of a diverse and multi-discipline team working on a variety of projects including next generation reactor design, reactor component/equipment development, medical isotopes, and advanced manufacturing technology development.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Maintain the Product Data Management (PDM) system for the Engineering and Manufacturing organization with SolidWorks as the CAD platform.
  • Work with CAD vendor to stay informed and initiate new CAD and PDM system upgrades.
  • Develop best practices for the Engineering and Manufacturing organizations regarding product structure, naming conventions, part descriptions, drawing standards, etc.
  • Ability to write scripts within the CAD and PDM system to customize the product to meet specific needs within the Engineering and Manufacturing organizations.
  • Establish and own workflow methodology for the Engineering organization and flow-downs to Manufacturing.
  • Maintain User access control. Ensure sensitive CAD data (e.g., parts, drawings, assemblies, Bill of Materials (BOMs), etc.) are safeguarded and managed for cleared personnel.
  • Train personnel on CAD, PDM and drawing standards used within the Engineering and Manufacturing organizations.
  • Design and create part drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials transitioning from design concept to preparation of fully engineered and professionally presentable drawing packages and specifications.
  • Prepare packages of drawings and associated documentation in accordance with approved standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with prototyping activities and advice on corrective action to resolve design problems.
  • Work closely with engineering, purchasing, production, and other teams to ensure design work meets requirements.
  • Evaluate and suggest improvements to product designs.
  • Ensure technical quality and accuracy of project work.


Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of a High School diploma is required. An Associate's degree is preferred.
  • Must possess at least ten (10) years of solid modeling and five (5) years PDM Admin experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of standard drafting policies and manufacturing processes including product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials is required.
  • Knowledge of project engineering activities (task plans, schedules, etc.) is required.
  • Must be able to effectively prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.


Preferred Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Proficient in SolidWorks.
  • Admin level proficiency in CAD Data Management Applications.
  • Proficient in ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Standard.
  • 2-year Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or Drafting.
