Position Overview:
As our Metallurgical Laboratory Engineer, you will prepare, analyze and generate reports for the acceptance of metallographic specimens, primarily weld and braze mockups. This also includes metallographic and SEM determination of intergranular attack (IGA), plating thickness, EDM/laser recast layers, grain size, and general microstructural characterization to other specifications and in support of production acceptance and material investigations. You will communicate closely with other Materials and Weld Engineers with the expectation to have the ability to support or lead material-related investigations, develop laboratory best practices/standard procedures and manage metallurgical supply inventories. You may also develop responsibilities as a Materials Engineer supporting internal and/or supplier material processing.

Your Day to Day as a Test Engineer:
- Utilization of automated (primarily) and manual metallographic equipment to section, mount, polish and etch samples for optical analysis.
- Metallographic evaluation of nickel alloy, stainless steel, carbon/alloy steel weld assemblies and cobalt alloy hardfacing to NAVSEA 250-1500-1 and ASTM E3.
- Metallographic evaluation of copper/copper alloy, alloy steel and nickel alloy braze joints per NAVSEA 0989-027-8000, NAVSEA 0900-LP-001-7000 and ASTM E3.
- Metallographic/SEM evaluation of other samples for IGA, plating thickness, EDM/laser recast layers, grain size, and general microstructural characterization per ASTM E3.
- Automated hardness mapping of hardened materials, bend testing of welded and plated samples, hydrogen embrittlement hang testing and metallic plate stripping of sample materials.
- Composition of metallographic reports for internal and customer review.
- Composition and maintenance of metallographic preparation and inspection procedures.
- Composition of test procedures for new equipment or analyses.
- Management of workflow and timely completion of metallographic and testing reports.
- Management of laboratory equipment maintenance.
- Management of metallographic consumable inventory.
- Operation of a SEM to support or lead surface analysis and microstructural investigations.
- Support or lead investigations into surface corrosion, contamination and plating defects.
- Support or lead investigations relating material properties to chemistry, processing parameters and microstructural characteristics.
- As time permits, supplement Materials Engineering support of internal and supplier operations such as heat treating, plating, EDM and other special processes.
- General lab consumable inventory management, capital package development for new equipment/capabilities.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor in Materials Science & Engineering or Weld Engineering.
- A minimum of one year of experience with metallographic preparation, optical microscopy and report composition.
- Strong verbal and technical writing skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

Pay: $$85,000.00 - $$134,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Ohio (US-OH) at the start of employment is expected to be between $$85,000.00 and $$134,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
