Safety & Health Technician

 

Location:

On-site Erwin, TN - BWXT Technical Services Group

 

 

Position Summary:

Provides field and administrative support for the safety and health activities of a workforce that carries out decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition work at an NRC-regulated Category I Fuel Fabrication Facility nuclear site.  Actively supports the company's safety and health programs designed to prevent occupational injury and illness.  Helps team follow priorities (in order) of safety, quality, schedule, and cost.  The Safety & Health Technician reports directly to the Environmental, Safety, & Health Manager.

 

Your day-to-day as a Safety & Health Technician:

 

  • Identify and assist management in implementing safety and health requirements & best practices.  Includes but is not limited to participating in project development activities as well as reviews of drawings, plans, and physical walk-downs of work locations.
  • Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control safety and health hazards through industry standard methods.
  • Perform calibration and checks of equipment used to monitor for physical and chemical hazards daily when in use. Maintain an accurate inventory of the equipment and consumables.
  • Monitor and evaluate line management’s implementation of safety & health requirements and programs.   Conduct & document field observations of work in progress.
  • Provide technical support to line management regarding implementation of safety & health regulations, requirements, company procedures, principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Review and assist with development of project/task level requirements and procedure documents to ensure safety & health requirements are identified and met.
  • Help cultivate and maintain healthy nuclear safety culture / Safety Conscious Work Environment within TSG organization.
  • Perform monitoring of employees and work areas for chemical hazards such as asbestos, lead, and silica.
  • Complete chain of custody forms for analysis of samples, and package samples for shipping.
  • Perform PPE inspections according to regulations and industry standards.
  • Assist with ensuring employees are in compliance with the task work document and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
  • Perform other safety-related tasks as assigned.
  • May involve some occasional overtime, which will be paid at FLSA rates.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum A.S. degree in technical field + 2 years of experience, or a minimum of 6 years of previous jobsite safety experience.
  • Ability to prioritize job duties.
  • Excellent oral and written skills to effectively communicate with employees, supervisors, and customer.
  • Strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen - no dual citizenship.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a DOE “Q” security clearance (equivalent to “Top Secret”) and able to maintain that clearance. 
  • Must complete and maintain appropriate radiological controls and other necessary qualifications.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active/current DOE clearance
  • Specialized training (such as OSHA 30-hour Construction, BCSP CHST, or BCSP STSC)
  • Previous experience in the nuclear or radiological field
  • Bachelor’s Degree

Pay: $56,810 - $105,500

 

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $56,810 and $105,500 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.  The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
