Fuel Development & Variability Reduction Unit Manager -- Nuclear Fuel Services (BWXT) -  Erwin, TN


Summary Description of Job:


Direct and support subordinate professional in the performance of Fuel Development and Variability programs at the NFS plant.  Control scope and spending for projects and studies assigned to FD&VR.  Provide expert leadership to subordinates in support of safe, cost effective, and on time delivery of products that meet or exceed customer expectations.  Initiate and participate in timely communications with customers (KAPL, Bettis, NNL, etc.).


Major Duties and Responsibilities of Job:


  • Provide strategic and tactical direction and strong leadership and ownership to NFS' DV&VR function as it relates to studies, projects, and research related to FD&VR while driving continuous improvement, standardization, best practices, document organization and management.   
  • May assume direct design responsibility for specific assigned projects/studies.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and ensure compliance with FD&VR engineering procedures, practices, tools, and methodologies related to project/study development and execution and related areas.
  • Provide technical supervision of NFS engineers, technicians, and designers assigned to projects.
  • Review engineering studies, analyses, design, cost estimates, and schedules as required
  • Guides, directs, and supervises contractors and/or construction contractors as required to fulfill assigned projects/studies.
  • Assist personnel in problem solving, setting priorities, and resolving conflicts.  Work with personnel to identify, develop, and implement actions to improve performance and reduce costs.
  • Provide tactical and strategic staffing recommendations and justifications to engineering and business unit leadership in support of project execution.
  • At least five years' experience required in developing AE design packages meeting nuclear industry requirements.
  • Execute other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Engineering Director.


Other Requirements:


Candidate must have recent experience in developing conceptual designs and technical studies dealing with fuel related topics.  Experience in Chemistry, chemical processing, and materials, especially related to fuel production is required.  Other experience should include design reviews, constructability reviews.  The candidate will be called upon to guide, direct, and consult with FD&VR customers, vendors, and contractors, as required, to fulfill assigned projects/studies.  Additionally, they will be responsible for assigning projects, studies, and tasks to project team members and assuring the assignments are completed in accordance with engineering procedures, practices, and standards.


Experience in DOE Nuclear Category 1 or 2 Facility support preferred.


A DOE Q Clearance or ability to obtain/maintain a Q Clearance is required.


Educational Requirements of Job:


B. S. -- Engineering from an ABET accredited university

M. S.  or M. B. A. preferred


Experience Requirements of Job (Beyond educational or equivalent)


Over ten years' experience in support of DOE Category 1 or 2 nuclear facility support.  At least five years' experience developing Architectural Engineering (AE) design packages to meet nuclear industry requirements.
