Hourly rate:  $44.83 – Fully Qualified (starts at Learner 1: $38.10/hr; Learner 2: $40.34/hr; Learner 3: $42.58) Progression based on merit not hours.

Position Overview:

 

Each member of our team plays a critical role in BWXT Canada’s success and in ensuring we meet our customers’ quality, cost and delivery expectations.  Our Welding Specialists are considered the best in the industry and we are proud of the high level of technical skills they demonstrate every day. Welding Specialists perform all types of manual welding in all types of manual welding in all positions on a weldable material to the Company radiographic and ultrasonic inspection acceptance standards. Will occasionally be required to lead and instruct welders/operators on existing, new or revised welding applications.

Your Day to Day as a Welding Specialist: 

 

  • Read and interpret Route Sheets, Drawings, Shop Instruction Sheet (SIS), Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS), Weld and Rod Cards; plan and organize the RT/UT welding process; identify and verify workpiece material; communicate with the team members and shop supervisor.
  • Repair welds both inside and outside drums and other pressure vessels by removing weld defects according to R.T. & U.T. reports and tracings, re-welds according to parameters on W.P.S. sheets
  • Performs welding and/or weld repairs to very close tolerances and requiring repetitive high performance often within very confined areas with limited access to surfaces to be welded. Examples but not limited to; Manual seal weld repair, welding primary head corner pieces, ceramic backing, back cladding and feeder adapter welding
  • Prepares surfaces to applicable cleanliness and NDE requirements. requirements and using special tools, gauges, fixtures, R.T. & U.T. reports and tracings, W.P.S., etc.
  • Performs manual welding to AP Welder & RT UT Welder quality standards and in multiple processes as required
  • Fits company product into position when performing jobs such as butt joints, nozzles, etc., as required for completion of welding operation.
  • Cleans and prepares surfaces to be welded or weld repaired and after completing welding to NDE standards.
  • Sets up, positions, preheats and welds, constructing special fixtures as required.
  • Performs work requiring knowledge of various types of metals, filler metals, welding parameters, preheat, postheat, interpass temperatures, allowance for fit-up and machining and the effect of shrinking, warpage and expansion.
  • Works in a safe manner.  Demonstrates good workmanship and practices.
  • Reverts to Utility or General Helper as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Proven commitment to workplace safety.
  • Commitment to quality and the ability to work as a positive, effective team member, willing to go the extra mile to ensure we meet our customer expectations.
  • Understand and adhere to quality requirements and productivity expectations.
  • 5 years manual welding in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to perform manual welding and repairs to RT UT quality standards and in multiple processes.
  • Intermediate level understanding of blueprint reading.
  • Must be comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights and in awkward positions.
  • Ability to pass fit-testing for the wearing of a respirator, if required.
  • Must be available to work any of the following shifts:
    • Days: 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. (Mon – Thurs) OR;
    • Afternoons: 4:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. (Mon – Thurs) OR;
    • Weekend days: 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Fri, Sat, Sun; paid for 40 hours) OR;
    • Weekend afternoons: 5:00 p.m. - 4:00 a.m.
