Position Overview:
As our Technical Specialist - Training and Shop, you will support the Welding, Technical Training and Development department by executing and coordinating employee qualification activities on the shop floor from onboarding to fully qualified employee. The main focus of this role will be on hourly production employee licensing and re-certification.

Your Day to Day as our Technical Specialist - Training and Shop
- Develop and deliver onboarding and technical training necessary for new hourly employees and internal transfers through structured shop-floor qualification pathways, including relevant procedures
- Integrate periodic refresher courses and recertification training to keep skills current and ensure compliance with industry standards
- Build training programs relevant to job class functions to ensure critical competencies are trained and provide upskilling opportunities
- Ensure qualification activities are evidence-based and completed in accordance with training and quality requirements
- Develop and design qualification criteria for applicable machinery, robotic systems, tools and other critical welding resources to ensure welder competency
- Create learning content to enhance learner experience through visual work instructions, job aids, and relevant training material
- Act as a point of coordination for shop-floor qualification scheduling to support workforce planning and readiness discussions
- Facilitate training committee meetings and enhancements made to learner standards to ensure on the job training is aligned with job role and relevant assessments
- Provide coaching, feedback and technical guidance to employees during qualification progression
- Support the maintenance of accurate records of qualification status, progress and completion using LMS, BW Weld and other technology systems
- Provide regular status updates to relevant departments and escalate risks related to qualification delays and gaps
- Deliver and update technical training such as WPS, Welder Qualification Procedures, and other operational training to sustain high performance for shop employees
- Support with Welding lab duties for coverage as necessary, including Maintain Welder Performance Qualification Record (WPQR) and Welding Operator Performance Qualification Record (WOPQR)
- Support an integrated welding training and qualification model, assisting with lab-based training and shop-floor qualification activities as needed
- Supports partnerships with post-secondary institutions by contributing technical expertise to recruitment events, workshop, information session, and outreach activities focused on developing future technical welding talent
Required Qualifications:
- Leadership experience in a manufacturing or skilled trades environment
- Knowledge of CSA Standard 47.1 an asset
- Experience with the following Welding Processes required: SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, SAW
- Strong facilitation and instructional skills with the ability to engage diverse learner groups
- High attention to detail with strong documentation and record-keeping capabilities
- Ability to evaluate competency objectively and provide constructive, actionable feedback
- Mechanical Testing of Materials certificate an asset
- Demonstrated ability in building and leading teams to drive improvement and reduce cost
- A “Critical Thinker” who applies a “Quality” mindset to problem solving and decision making
- Strong written and verbal communications skills in the English language
- Ability to read complex mechanical part drawings with tight tolerances
- Proficiency using the Microsoft Suite of software, especially Excel
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of ASME code section III and IX an asset
- Knowledge of manufacturing operations and best practices including Lean Manufacturing, 5S and Continuous Improvement teams an asset
- Experience with delivering training to adults an asset

The base salary range for this position in Ontario (CA-ON) at the start of employment is expected to be between $$68,000 and $$100,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
