Layout Developer (for nuclear steam generating components)

We have opportunities for Layout Developers (for nuclear steam generating components) to join our production team at our facility in Cambridge, ON.  Each member of our team plays a critical role in BWXT Canada’s success and in ensuring we meet our customers’ quality, cost and delivery expectations.  Our tradespeople are considered the best in the industry and we are proud of the high level of technical skills they demonstrate every day.

Develop written layout techniques on large nuclear components.
Layout tools such as trammels, scales, dividers, square, protractor, center punch, plumb bob, micrometers, transit scopes, etc.
Ferrous and non-ferrous sheet plate, bar, pipe, weldments and structural configurations, such as drums, headers, downcomers, etc.

• Reads and interprets Work Orders, drawings, Shop Instruction Sheets (SIS).
• Receives and interprets drawings and/or prints and sketches; makes sketches as required.
• Identifies and stamps the workpiece; records workpiece material identification.
• Identifies and verifies workpiece material type.
• Performs complex mathematical calculations in relation to positional dimensions for products and tooling (includes trigonometry, fraction calculations, dimensional degree calculations).
• Ability to interpret geometric tolerances and critique same.
• Selects and transports material to and from layout area manually, through the use of overhead crane and/or by using pneumatic chain hoist.
• Performs dimensional checks on products and tools prior to final inspection; ensures accuracy of drawings and suggests modifications.
• Plans out and organizes; and performs layout development job.
• Develops layout of job from drawings and/or print dimensions; employs mathematics and/or mathematical tables or other means when necessary to layout work for economy of materials and operations.
• Performs various types of material verification (i.e. rubbing, taking a digital photo, etc.).
• Scribes or marks reference lines, points and circles on the surface of metal indicating such operations as fitting of attachments (i.e. nozzles and lifting lugs), drilling, bending, forming, burning, etc.; indicates center by center punching.
• Instructs Fitters in difficult work as required.
• Makes templates and jigs for various operations throughout plant.
• Assists Fitters as required by performing Fitter duties when not required on Layout work.
• Demonstrates good workmanship and practices.

• Proven commitment to workplace safety.
• Commitment to quality and the ability to work as a positive, effective team member, willing to go the extra mile to ensure we meet our customer expectations.
• Advanced understanding of blueprint reading.
• Fitting and welding background is a definite asset.
• Demonstrated ability to perform complex mathematical calculations in relation to positional dimensions for products and tooling (includes trigonometry, fraction calculations, dimensional degree calculations).
• Must be available to work any of the following shifts:
o weekday day shift (4x10, Monday-Thursday, 6:00am – 4:00pm);
o weekday afternoon shift (4x10, Monday-Thursday, 4:00pm – 2:00am);
o weekend day shift (3X11 [paid for 40 hrs], Friday-Sunday, 6:00am – 5:00pm);
o weekend afternoon shift (3X11 [paid for 40 hrs], Friday-Sunday, 5pm to 4am).

Candidates selected for interviews will need to undergo testing for math skills, blueprint reading and weld symbols.
