BWXT Canada Ltd. is looking for a SITE SAFETY SPECIALIST – (to be stationed at Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations)

 

JOB PURPOSE

 

To provide support to project worksites and project training facilities in order to meet our obligations under our Environmental Health and Safety Management System.  This role mainly communicates with employees (informing employees of company policies, procedures and health and safety regulations, and providing employee health and safety training).  Will also communicate with organizations outside of the company (regulators, customer representatives).  Inform and maintain relations on compliance issues with external organizations and regulatory agencies.  This job reports to the Manager, Human Performance & EHS and has no direct reports.

 

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Perform job safety risk assessments and job hazard analysis by thoroughly understanding site processes and/or project requirements by conducting employee interviews and interfacing with project Field Supervisors, Engineers and Technicians.
  • Issue EHS Work Permits for all non-routine work.
  • Perform responsibilities documented in the EHS Program Procedures (i.e. confined space, fall protection, combustible dust, industrial hygiene, new Chemical Approvals, chemical lead, risk assessments, lock-out/tag-out) and perform audits and safety inspections in the workplace.
  • Develop and maintain general knowledge of existing and proposed regulations. Provide technical and compliance guidance to employees and management.
  • Deliver, or coordinate training and/or participate in the selection of qualified individuals to deliver training and verify delivery of training as per the training program.
  • Support in-house projects/initiatives by assisting Supervision in the completion of Safe Work Plans and delivering safety orientations with contractors from time to time.
  • Administer compliance tracking programs and record keeping systems (i.e. Gensuite, Learning Management System) for worker training, routine tasks, worker concerns, action items and event reporting.
  • Update EHS procedures and other EHS program documentation as required.
  • Lead the issue resolution process related to near miss and injury investigations; develop detailed reports based on root cause analysis, recommend solutions, assist in implementation of corrective actions, follow-up where required.
  • Assist with WSIB reporting and return to work as needed.
  • Active involvement and/or leadership of various safety committees on-site (i.e. Policy Committee, Workplace Safety Committee, Ergonomics Committee).
  • Assist with routine industrial hygiene monitoring programs.
  • Assist with business proposals by collecting relevant EHS information.
  • Interface effectively with all levels within the company as well as organizations outside of the business (i.e. customers and regulators).
  • Promote various safety initiatives and demonstrate a “safety first” mindset.
  • Provide EHS Orientation training for all new hires.  

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Post-secondary education (4-year bachelor's degree OR a 2-year certificate in occupational health and safety OR equivalent).
  • Minimum 4 years experience in an EHS related role.
  • Previous experience in the general construction or nuclear industry.
  • CRSP certification or (R)CSO certification is an asset.
  • Strong overall knowledge of applicable environmental statutes and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable Canadian EHS regulations and standards.
  • Ability to think creatively in providing effective solutions to complex problems.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office software.
  • Knowledge of EHS Management Systems (e.g. ISO:14001, ISO:45001).
  • Prior experience working in a unionized environment is preferred.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $74,000 and $111,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
