Materials/Metallurgical/Welding Engineer to work as part of a team in supporting stress relief operations and Welding Engineering duties.

Stress relief tasks entail preparing for and performing stress relief treatments on ferrous and non-ferrous materials.  Preferred candidate would have a technical understanding of gas and electric furnace operations and control systems.  Individual would eventually be responsible for developing heat treat procedures. These include the pre-heat treatment plans, documenting the required actions/steps, verifying compliance to contractural specifications, working with the furnace personnel during all phases of the furnace operations. 

 

Design of inert gas purge chambers and/or systems will be part specific.  The candidate should be able to understand the various furnace operating control and data acquisition systems and have the ability to recognize performance issues during the run, taking appropriate actions when needed.  Travel for this position would be minimal however the ability to attend off site training for a week at a time could be required in order for the candidate to learn specific furnace control systems and operations.  This training may be required within the first several months of employment. 

 

Experience with basic metallographic procedures and equipment for sample preparation and evaluation.  Report generation of findings.  Understanding of laboratory and heat treat dew point, temperature, O2 & water conductivity equipment calibrations.  Ideal candidate would have 2+ years experience in stress relief theory, application and furnace operation. Specific training on stress relief practices will be provided.

 

Welding Engineering duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Preparation, review, approval and release of written welding procedures in accordance with specifications and weld procedure qualifications
  • Preparation and review of welding/fabrication plans (i.e. bead placement sketches, setup sheets, welding instructions)
  • Qualification,documentation and maintenance of welding procedures and welder/welding operators
  • Supervision of welders and welding operators on critical welding operations
  • Trouble shooting of welding operations (i.e. weldability issues, welding equipment failures)
  • Identification, design, procurement and implementation of welding equipment and/or fixture needs. The Welding Engineer applicant must have a theoretical understanding of the gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc and submerged arc welding processes.  Actual welding proficiency is not required, but hands on experience is desirable.
  • The applicant should have a working knowledge of commercial and/or military welding qualification and fabrication specifications through practical experience and/or classwork or training
  • Applicant must have a theoretical understanding of the welding of ferrous and non-ferrous base metal and weld metals.  This understanding includes, but is not limited to the bulk base metal microstructure, bulk phase transformations of the base metals and weld metals, that can occur during a welding process.  The ability to determine the proper selection of welding filler metals is desired.
  • A candidate who has knowledge and experience in one area but a strong desire to learn will be considered. 

 

 

 

 

Job requirements:

 

  • Actual welding proficiency is not required, but hands-on-experience is desirable.  
  • Preferred candidate would have a technical understanding of gas and electric furnace operations and control systems. 
  • The Engineer should have a working knowledge of commercial and/or military welding qualification and fabrication specifications through practical experience and/or school classes. 
  • Applicants must have a theoretical understanding of the welding of ferrous and non-ferrous base metals. This understanding includes but is not limited to the bulk base metal microstructure, bulk phase transformations of the base metals and weld metal that can occur during a welding process, and the proper selection of filler metals.
  • A degreed Materials or Welding Engineer is required.  Qualified candidates must be a U.S. citizen, able to receive a government security clearance, and pass pre-employment background and drug screening.
  •  Individuals with prior experience with heat treat operations is a plus but not required.
