BWXT is currently seeking an I&C Data Scientist for its Advanced Technologies location in Barberton, Ohio!
BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.
The Instrumentation & Controls Data Scientist will be responsible for the development and integration of software and hardware sensors, and machine vision and artificial intelligence techniques for robotics systems in R&D and manufacturing environments. The I&C data scientist will be a hands-on experimentalist, implementing advanced sensor suites and producing insights through data models, data pipelines and machine learning analysis that transform our understanding of process and product, energy systems for now and the future, on the ground, and space and out at sea. This role involves working closely with robotics programmers to integrate new technology into existing machines, ensuring seamless operation and enhanced performance, as well as new innovations for new processes. Data from sensors will be used to create machine learning models for developing insights on physical phenomena, predicting upset conditions, and controlling outcomes.
This position is an in-person/hybrid position located in Barberton, Ohio. Relocation benefits are available dependent on the candidate.
Job Duties / Responsibilities:
- Software Development:
- Design, develop, and implement software solutions for monitoring robotics applications.
- Write, test, and maintain machine learning algorithms for robotic systems.
- Troubleshoot and debug software issues for innovative robotic applications.
- Hardware Development:
- Design, develop, and prototype hardware sensors to monitor robotics systems.
- Integrate sensors, actuators, and control systems into robotic platforms.
- Perform hardware testing and validation.
- Data Analysis:
- Use machine learning tools to select features, create and optimize classifiers.
- Carry out preprocessing of structured and unstructured data.
- Process, clean, and validate the integrity of data to be used for analysis.
- Develop prediction systems and machine learning algorithms to assist with maintaining quality manufacturing of robotic systems.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with robotics programmers to ensure cohesive integration of software and hardware components.
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of new sensor systems.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field. Master’s degree is preferred and depending on the degree can be substituted as relevant work experience.
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience.
- Proven experience in software and hardware development.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or similar.
- Experience with robotic control systems, sensors, actuators, or similar.
- Knowledge of machine learning methods and AI deployment techniques.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex systems.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with CAD software for mechanical design.
- Understanding of industrial automation and control systems.

Pay: $63,000.00 - $99,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Ohio (US-OH) at the start of employment is expected to be between $63,000.00 and $99,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
