This position supports the BWXT-led Nuclear Laboratories Partners of Canada (NLPC) contract, overseeing Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) operations for Canadian National Laboratories. Key responsibilities include executing the offsite strategy for waste recovery and disposition, leading the trenches strategy, developing and implementing the Standpipes and Bunkers Manual Delivery strategy, managing the Standpipes and Bunkers Waste Retrieval System (SBWRS), and spearheading the refurbishment and return to service of WL’s Hot Cells to enable remote waste handling capabilities.
Job Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or a relevant discipline required; an advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 20 years of relevant experience.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Canadian security clearance.
- Prior experience with AECL or other Canadian regulatory bodies preferred.
- Must reside near or be willing to relocate to the Whiteshell site.
Job Description/Duties:
- Reports to the Head of Whiteshell Laboratories (WL), assisting in project planning, staffing, and resource coordination for legacy waste retrieval.
- Provides oversight of WL operations supporting waste recovery strategies, including trench retrieval, Standpipes and Bunkers manual delivery, and SBWRS implementation.
- Leads the refurbishment, readiness planning, and operational restoration of WL Hot Cells, facilitating remote handling of complex and hazardous waste streams.
- Manages retrieval, characterization, conditioning, and repackaging of high-dose rate material, fissile waste, pyrophoric substances, chemicals, and combustible gases.
- Contributes to strategic planning aimed at accelerating results and removing operational barriers.
- Promotes risk-aware decision-making and early implementation of mitigation strategies.
- Maintains clear, effective communications between CNL and WL teams.
- Fosters a robust nuclear safety culture with strict adherence to regulatory and organizational safety standards.
- Ensures compliance with all Canadian regulations, contractual obligations, and CNL policies.
- Applies lessons learned and best practices from Canadian and U.S. nuclear decommissioning projects.
- Supports workforce development, recruiting, and retention strategies.
- Coordinates with AECL and other stakeholders for high-level communications and updates.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by Head of WL.

The base salary range for this position in South Carolina (US-SC) at the start of employment is expected to be between $161,000 USD and $233,000 USD per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
