This position is assigned to the Canadian Nuclear Laboratory (CNL) in Chalk River, Ontario, Canada.

 

 

Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or other relevant discipline is required.  A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is desired. 
  • A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience is required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant managerial experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Canadian security clearance is required.
  • Experience working with AECL or other Canadian regulatory bodies is desired.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Canadian Work Permit.
  • Must live in or be willing to relocate near the Chalk River, Ontario Site. 


Job Description/Duties:

  • Establishes, advances, implements, and monitors company environmental safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the organization’s business strategy and goals.
  • Participates in the corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation for projects, programs, and people.
  • Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies and evaluates fundamental issues, providing strategy and direction for major functional areas.
  • Acts as a decision maker on administrative and operational matters and ensures the achievement of organizational objectives and goals.
  • Oversees safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, monitors hazardous waste removal vendors, and may assist in consolidating hazardous waste (chemical, radioactive, and/or medical).
  • Collaborates with employees and senior management to collect data, anticipate challenges, and respond in a timely and decisive manner, while putting preventive measures in place to mitigate future issues from reoccurring.
  • Interacts with a variety of departments, conducts training in emergency response and hazardous material handling.
  • Interacts with others in the administration of the worker’s compensation program and the implementation of workplace ergonomics and program solutions.
  • Maintains and applies a detailed understanding of all OH&S and Q missions, challenges, and potential solutions, including successes and lessons learned from OH&S and Q.
  • Monitors environmental compliance and maintains liaison with appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures the successful implementation of strategies to accelerate progress, enable long-term planning, and advance liability and risk reduction. 
  • Leads the oversight of very large complex projects, reviewing risk mitigation and large cost trade-offs that impact speed of delivery. 
  • Ensures compliance with Canadian laws and regulations, contract requirements, and CNL policies and procedures.
  • Develops OH&S and Q plans to enable and ensure success of ongoing laboratory operations.
  • Manages resources, budgets and workforce needed to ensure safe and cost-effective completion of project objectives to meet corporate and customer requirements.
  • Engages and builds relationships with a diverse and broad range of stakeholders and right holders.
  • Works with senior leadership to establish strong, two-way communication with AECL and the regulator, the general public, local and host communities and Indigenous Nations and communities, among others.
  • Recommends corrective action where environmental health and safety hazards exist.
  • The work of the Environmental Health & Safety Engineer who is an Industrial Hygienist involves industrial hygiene, life safety, and ergonomic compliance-related activities
  • Works with OH&S and Q team to identify the roles that are needed to support the OH&S and Q mission and proactively develops comprehensive and creative strategies to attract and retain talent. 
  • Performs routine assessments of OH&S and Q staff and processes, implements corrective actions and provides oversight of improvement initiatives.
  • Fosters continuous improvement based on industry best practices, adapting strategies that leverage best-in-class trends and lessons learned at CNL and other sites in Canada and the United States.
  • Adapts to challenges by identifying and resolving issues promptly, making informed decisions to ensure project compliance, scope, schedule and budget.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

The base salary range for this position in South Carolina (US-SC) at the start of employment is expected to be between $207,000 USD and $271,000 USD per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
